Discover the magic of the Secret Forest Christmas Trail at Hazlewood Castle

The Secret Forest

If you’re searching for a truly enchanting festive experience this year, look no further than The Secret Forest Christmas Trail at Hazlewood Castle. Nestled within the castle’s ancient woodland, this lantern-lit trail invites you and your family into a world of fairy-tale wonder, seasonal sparkle, and woodland folklore.

A Woodland Wonderland, Illuminated

From 10th–24th December, the Secret Forest comes alive each evening from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm, when winding forest paths are glowing under soft fairy lights.

In the heart of the woods lies the Bogglinton Village, home to the mischievous Bogglins. Even though they are normally grumpy, they can’t resist the festive cheer you'll find them humming carols, decorating their burrow homes, and spreading woodland merriment.

Meet Santa in His Woodland Village

At the trail’s end, step into Santa’s Woodland Village, a cosy, festive oasis tucked among the trees. It’s here that guests can meet Santa himself, take part in seasonal workshops, and make a Christmas wish beneath twinkling boughs.

Santa visits happen daily between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm, but remember pre-booking is essential.

Festive Treats to Warm the Heart

No magical woodland experience would be complete without some delicious seasonal treats. At the woodland shop, you can indulge in:

  • Wood-fired pizzas
  • Giant toasted marshmallows over an open flame
  • Mulled wine & warm mince pies
  • Mulled apple juice for younger guests
  • Creamy hot chocolate

The Legend That Inspired It All

The Secret Forest is more than just a trail it's steeped in the history and myth of Hazlewood Castle. Legend has it that Sir Mauger Le Vavasour freed a fairy, Willow, from a witch long ago. In gratitude, the fairy queen granted his family magical blessings. But dark times followed, and Bogglins were conjured by the witch to cause mischief. In the final battle, a guardian dragon came to the rescue, banishing her forever.

As you explore, you’ll pass the Fairy Village, peek into the witch’s house, and even stand beside Sir Vavasour’s castle battlements.
